The July 18th issue of the Wall Street Journal published an article about the excessive use of ultrasounds performed by commercial ultrasound businesses and physicians for low-risk pregnant women. The FDA has repeatedly warned women about the dangers of “keepsake ultrasounds,” a topic that I discussed in The Smart Mother’s Guide to a Better Pregnancy. However, when a topic like this reaches the Wall Street Journal, one has to question why? As an ob-gyn physician, I’m fully aware that the revenue earned by physicians has substantially decreased and unfortunately, people look for creative ways to increase their income. An ultrasound is a medical device used for diagnostic purposes. It is not a tool for patient entertainment.
I think The Wall Street Journal did an excellent review of this topic. Please feel free to share your comments or concerns.
