Do Pregnant Women Receive Excessive Ultrasounds? The July 18th issue of the Wall Street Journal published an article about the excessive use of ultrasounds performed by commercial ultrasound businesses and physicians for low-risk pregnant women.  The FDA has repeatedly warned women about the dangers of “keepsake ultrasounds,” a topic that I discussed in The Smart Mother’s Guide to a Better Pregnancy. However, when a topic like this reaches the Wall Street Journal, one has to question why? As an ob-gyn physician, I’m fully aware that the revenue earned by physicians has substantially decreased and unfortunately, people look for creative ways to increase their income. An ultrasound is a medical device used for diagnostic purposes. It is not a tool for patient entertainment.

I think The Wall Street Journal did an excellent review of this topic. Please feel free to share your comments or concerns.
